Previously called "Church of St John" or "Church of the caves", this crypt was the original primitive church.

Considered an architectural gem, it boasts murals of the tenth century representing episodes from the legend of St Gilles.

The choir connects to the cloister walk via three small doors where the vault is painted with the oldest fresco, "Christ in Majesty", in the Byzantine style (late eleventh century) in a “double glory almond” setting.
